Key Club International is the high school organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. Key Club assists Kiwanis in carrying out its mission to serve the children of the world. High school student members of Key Club perform acts of service in their communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels.
Key Club International brings together all Key Club's members' efforts and energies into an area that makes an international impact through the Major Emphasis Program, "Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” The Major Emphasis Program (MEP) unites Key Clubs under the banner of service that deals with the most important part of our community, our youth.
The Key Club service initiative is the hands-on element of the MEP and is created on a two-year basis. All of the hands-on service provided to children by Key Club International members is directed to a single area of need, to make a substantial impact. The current service initiative, Live 2 Learn, focuses on the personal development and social interaction of children. Key Club members can help them learn through mentoring, making friends and working together.
Each year, Key Club International teams up with its three partner organizations, March of Dimes, Children’s Miracle Network and UNICEF, for the fundraising element of the MEP. As you plan your club’s service programming for the year, keep these organizations in mind. Each Key Club is encouraged to participate with our partners as we join together to make a difference in the lives of children.
On December 17th, Santa came to visit Boardman at the special request of the Kiwanis Club and shared a pancake and sausage breakfast with 136 people. Children had the opportunity to make a craft with members of the Riverside High School Key Club, submit their last minute gift request directly to Santa, and take a wagon ride with Brian and Karli Cook from Irrigon.
Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Claus for visiting us during their busiest time of the year; Eastern Oregon Mobile Slaughter for donating the sausage; ConAgra Foods for donating the pancake mix; the Boardman Senior’s for the use of their facility; Three Mile Canyon for their donation; and again to Equine Elegance, Brian and Karli Cook, for the wagon rides.
On November 15th, Jane and Doug Pope, and Pam Docken went to Sam Boardman Elementary School and gave out 175 dictionaries to the entire third grade class. Then, on November 22, Jane Pope and Kate Close along with Principal John Sebastian gave a repeat performance at AC Houghton Elementary School in Irrigon, handing out around 150 more dictionaries. This is such a joyful event as the students really enjoy receiving the dictionary and it is so fun to see the kids’ expressions.
On Wednesday, November 9th,2011, the Kiwanis Club of Boardman spearheaded another Blanket-making party to help supply more blankets for the Department of Human Services. Nearly 500 children entered the doors of Riverside High School in Boardman to enjoy the Kiwanis Club of Boardman’s Annual Halloween party. With help from our RHS Key Club members, fellow high school students and residents of the community, costumed trick-or-treaters went to 26 doors receiving candy and even a toothbrush, tooth paste and floss donated by Advantage Dental! Around 225 people found their way to the school’s kitchen and enjoyed a hot dog provided by ConAgra, chips and a soda all for $1.00.
We would like to send out a special thank you to all the businesses that helped to sponsor this very successful event:

The Boardman Marina Park was THE place to be on Saturday, September 24th, as the weather was perfect; the crowd delightful, the food delicious, the beer and wine fabulous, the car show spectacular and the music entertaining! What more could you ask for at the 3rd annual Rollin’ on the River? The Kiwanis Club of Boardman and the Boardman Chamber of Commerce combined forces to bring this fun-filled event to our community. Stay tuned to find out when this event will be scheduled for next year!
On April 25 the Boardman Kiwanis gathered at the Senior Center to make blankets for Department of Human Services. DHS gives the blankets to kids placed out of their home, emergencies such as auto accidents and fires in our area.
Margie and Jim Hollandsworth, Diane Wolfe, Debbie Radie, and Jane Pope showed up to cut and tie the blankets and sew on the Boardman Kiwanis logo. Pizza and a drink were provided by Jim and Margie Hollandsworth. The members had started out to make ten blankets but with only five members present decided to make half and gather again to complete the rest.
The Kiwanis Club of Boardman had the opportunity to present a special gift to a local girl this month. Barb Orwick, Developmental Disabilities Program Manager for Community Counseling Solutions had a young client that needed assistance with turning pages in her reading books. Barb contacted the Kiwanis Club in Boardman and asked if they could help by providing a “Nook Book” for her client. The club decided to purchase the Nook Book and help with barbs request.
Past President Joe Taylor volunteered for this project and purchased the Nook Book for the club and while working with Barb Orwick organized a presentation of the Nook Book to the local girl. On April 26, 2011 Taylor and club members Diane Wolfe, Pam Docken, Mindy Binder, Rhonda Hamby, and Jane Pope presented Cari Barton, a student at Riverside Jr/Sr high school with the Nook Book. Cari was thrilled with the book as was her mother. Cari’s mother Brook, pointed out that the Nook Book would allow Cari to just push a button to turn the page without her having to physically turn each page. She can also easily change the font size. The Nook Book gives Cari the ability to download books off the internet.
The Kiwanis Club of Boardman was very proud to be able to present this gift to Cari.
On Saturday, April 23rd, the Boardman Tillicum Club sponsored the annual Boardman Easter Egg Hunt. Our Kiwanis members Jim and Margie Hollandsworth, Joe Taylor and Diane Wolfe helped set up the egg hunt area. What takes adults two hours to set up takes a couple hundred children less than 20 minutes to “clean-up”! If only this worked on days other than Easter! Everyone had a fun time!!
Just like spring brings uncertain weather, our best made plans are subject to change. Our multi-family yard sale was originally postponed due to exceptionally strong winds on the day we planned to have the sale (Thank you, Mr. Spring weather!). But, upon further evaluation, we have decided that more items need to be collected in order to have a successful yard sale. Do you have some things taking up space in a corner somewhere that you would like to donate to our Kiwanis Club? Please contact Jim Hollandsworth at dsprings@centurylink.com or Joe Taylor at (541) 314-0144 to arrange a pickup time.
Looking ahead to April, spring must definitely be in the air as things are moving and shaking, buzzing and budding! Friday, April 1st (and this is NO fooling!), there will be a “work” party to prepare items for the Multi-Family Yard Sale. The toil is scheduled to begin at 5:30pm at Mt. Valley Land Company / Oregon 1st Community Credit Union. The plan is to price as many donated items as possible while setting them on tables to ease the set up of the yard sale the following morning.
Saturday, April 2nd, will be our Multi-Family Yard Sale from 9:00am to 2:00pm. We will need some people to help move the previously set up tables outside for placement and finish up other odds and ends that need attention. We are still looking for people to be “customer associates” during the yard sale. If you have time to give, please email Deanne Irving at deanne.irving@gmail.com to get on the schedule. The Columbia River Harvesters are scheduled to collect all the unsold items at the end of the sale, but a few extra hands to help load will sure make things go quickly.
Saturday, April 16th, is the Multiple Sclerosis Walk in Pendleton. We are still looking to put a team together. If you would like to participate, please contact Michelle Erickson at Lleana.erickson@conagrafoods.com.
Saturday, April 23rd, the Tillicum is sponsoring the Annual Boardman Easter Egg hunt. Our members will be assisting in the set up, with the “hunting” beginning at 10:00am sharp at the Boardman Marina.
Thursday, April 28th, our Riverside High School Key Club will have their annual Installation Banquet at the Port of Morrow facility at 7:00pm. Please come and support this successful and energetic group of kids as they commemorate the years’ achievements and install the new group of officers preparing for another prosperous year.
Meanwhile, don’t forget our meetings! Thursday, April 7th and Thursday, April 21st at 6:30am at the River Lodge and Grill are our Breakfast meetings, and at the April 7th meeting, Diane Wolfe, Chamber Director (and a beloved member), will be giving an update on the new Sage Center coming to Boardman. Our Board Meeting will be Thursday, April 14th at noon at the Mt. Valley Land Company conference room; don’t forget to bring your own lunch!
Whew! Good thing spring brings rejuvenation to the spirit and soul!
